Limerick Libraries has chosen Tell the Truth, a mystery-thriller by local author Karen Fitzgibbon, as the first title for One Limerick, One Book. The programme, supported by Creative Ireland, invites readers across the city and county to read the same novel, talk about it and share their reactions.
How the title was chosen
A team of senior Limerick librarians reviewed a range of recently published titles before settling on Tell the Truth. The novel was selected against a set of criteria: a strong link to Limerick through its author, setting or subject; broad appeal to general readers and book clubs; enough copies to supply libraries countywide; the author's availability for related events; and the potential to spark discussion. The book's contemporary Limerick setting and its compelling mystery storyline weighed heavily in the decision.
Why a thriller fits the programme
The choice reflects national reading habits. Research commissioned by the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) found that crime and thriller novels are the most popular fiction genre among Irish adults, with 50% of respondents naming them as a preferred genre. The spring 2026 publication date also meant libraries could acquire copies through the public library book supply framework, which are now available across Limerick.
What organisers hope the scheme will achieve
Mayor of Limerick John Moran said the initiative offers a shared story at a time when reading and viewing are increasingly shaped by algorithms. Cllr. Tom Ruddle, Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, said the choice celebrates local creativity and the wider benefits of reading. Director General Dr Pat Daly said the council wanted a book that would resonate with a wide audience while showcasing local literary talent, and hopes the scheme will encourage book clubs and library events. Fitzgibbon said her sense of place shaped the novel, with characters moving through well-known local landmarks, and that she hopes both longtime residents and newcomers will find something of the city's character in its pages.
